FOUNDATIONS

His Church at Work was birthed out of the vision and calling to provide ALL churches with the opportunity, ability and tools to successfully equip, resource and commission church members for effective and joyful "ministry" at work, no matter where that work is carried out. Today, His Church at Work serves churches throughout the country through a simple yet highly effective system called the WorkLife Spiritual Pathway. The WorkLife Spiritual Pathway strengthens and gives form to the WorkLife Ministries of His Church at Work’s successful church models.

Spada FamilyOur ministry was originated by Doug Spada, founder and President of His Church at Work. A consistent desire to make a positive contribution integrated perfectly with Doug’s early years in the military as a nuclear engineer and an operator of fast attack submarines. Following this, Doug threw his energies into starting and running a successful energy consulting firm in Southern California throughout the 90's.

Doug increasingly found himself involved in sharing the reality of the gospel within the context of daily work and those relationships that come from that environment. Struggling to find the best way to personally experience God’s best and deepest calling for his life, Doug looked to his own local church for answers. This is when the confusion and truth of personal calling and work increased.  Click here to watch a video of Doug presenting the WorkLife Vision.

CRITICAL LEARNING

Assuming that joining church staff would be the most significant way to walk out his sense of personal calling to serve Christ, Doug set out to do just that. However, this door kept closing and Doug struggled to understand why. This experience contributed to an increasing sense of confusion and frustration concerning Doug’s understanding of faith, work and calling. After a challenging period of grappling with this issue, God led Doug to the profound but practical truth that his spiritual gifting had everything to do with his vocational life irrespective of the role or place. Work took on an entirely new perspective as Doug discovered and began to experience the biblical truth that work is a holy calling if done with, for and through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Finally, there was freedom to work as a genuine calling of God. See our Worklife Ministry Core Values.

VISION TO APPLICATION

The birth of His Church at Work was in germination stage. God continued to pursue Doug, calling him to a year of prayer focused on seeking how to best assist others like himself, struggling in this area of calling related to faith and work. And what about the local church's role in this? Doug envisioned the tremendous leverage and impact working believers could have on the kingdom of God IF they were equipped and released by their local churches in a sustainable way. Ultimately, it became clear to Doug that God wanted to use him to help local church congregations to both see and actually take up their mandate to practically help their members in this critical area of worklife calling and ministry (Eph 4:11-12) - something that had never been done before in a viable way.

As God directed, Doug started right where he was, testing in his own local church. Journey Community Church in San Diego CA, launched the first church-based and congregation-wide WorkLife Ministry in the United States. Journey case study. In late 2003, His Church at Work began replicating church-based worklife ministry models in other churches. Wooddale Church, a 5,000 member congregation pastored by Dr. Leith Anderson in Eden Prairie, MN was an early example of the success of His Church at Work's WorkLife Impact Methodology. Wooddale case study.

Since then, churches of various denominations, size, and age from around the country have been launching WorkLife Ministry in partnership with His Church at Work.
